When Do Fire Extinguishers Need Service?
Most portable extinguishers require:
Annual inspections
Six-year maintenance for dry chemical units
Hydrostatic testing every 12 years (or every 5 years for CO₂ and some foam units)
Following these intervals helps ensure your fire extinguishers function properly and meet code requirements.

What’s Included in Our Fire Extinguisher Service?
- Visual inspection for damage, corrosion, or tampering
- Internal component cleaning and seal replacement
- Recharging with the proper extinguishing agent
- Hydrostatic testing (as required by interval and type)
- Service tags and digital inspection reports for compliance tracking
- AHJ-approved documentation and scheduling reminders

Why Are There Regular Fire Extinguisher Service & Repair Intervals?
Extinguishers that appear intact may still fail under pressure without proper servicing. As required by NFPA 10, fire extinguisher service intervals are designed to prevent breakdowns, leaks, or loss of charge that could render the unit useless during an emergency.
Risks of neglecting service:
Voided insurance claims
Fines from OSHA or local authorities (AHJs)
Liability during fire-related incidents
Failed inspections or delays in occupancy permits

Fire Extinguisher Service Intervals by Type
6-Year Maintenance (ABC Fire Extinguishers)
- ABC fire extinguishers typically require a 6-year maintenance interval. During this maintenance, the extinguisher undergoes a thorough examination, internal inspection, and necessary maintenance tasks. However, a hydrostatic test is not typically required for ABC fire extinguishers at the 6-year mark.
12-Year Hydrostatic Test (ABC Fire Extinguishers)
- ABC fire extinguishers are subject to a hydrostatic test after 12 years of service. This test involves pressurizing the extinguisher's cylinder to a specific level to check for any leaks or weaknesses. The hydrostatic test helps ensure the integrity and safety of the pressure vessel. If the extinguisher passes the hydrostatic test, it can be recharged and returned to service.
5-Year Maintenance (Water and Foam Extinguishers)
- Water and foam fire extinguishers, commonly used for Class A fires, require a 5-year maintenance interval. This interval includes an internal examination to inspect the extinguishing agent, internal components, and seals or valves. The extinguisher is also externally inspected for any signs of damage or corrosion. If any issues are found, the extinguisher is repaired, recharged, and returned to service.
12-Year Maintenance (Carbon Dioxide Extinguishers)
- Carbon dioxide (CO2) fire extinguishers, typically used for Class B and Class C fires, have a 12-year maintenance interval. This interval involves thoroughly inspecting the extinguisher's shell, hoses, discharge horns, and valves. The pressure gauge is also checked to ensure it indicates the proper pressure level. The CO2 extinguisher is hydrostatically tested to ensure its pressure vessel's integrity and recharged.
**A Note on NFPA 10 Requirements
-
This guide is intended to provide a helpful overview of general fire extinguisher service intervals, but it does not capture every detail outlined in NFPA 10. Fire extinguishers vary in design, size, and extinguishing agent—each with slightly different inspection, testing, and maintenance requirements. For example, extinguishers with different valve types, pressure systems, or chemical compositions may follow different hydrostatic test timelines or internal maintenance procedures.
Additionally, NFPA 10 permits the use of electronic monitoring systems as an alternative to manual monthly inspections under certain conditions. These systems offer real-time status tracking and can be an excellent solution for facilities looking to modernize their fire protection program or reduce manual labor.
For complete compliance, we recommend working with a qualified fire protection provider—like Integrity Fire—to ensure all device-specific requirements are addressed and properly documented according to the latest standards.
